Athena's Top 3/Bottom 3 Cards

Image
Hey again everyone!  Been a while for me as well, but figured I'd write something now, what with the recent release of Opus 7 and the ever approaching start of our new local circuit this weekend.  I wanted to do something like an Opus 7 top 3/bottom 3 post, but it's actually pretty hard for me to do since I kind of have the same mentality as our teammate John, where I think every card has the potential to be good or playable (and some cards have the potential to be REALLY good).  But, I'll try my best to choose my Opus 7 top 3 (favorite, or cards I think are good or am looking forward to playing most) and bottom 3 (cards I'm not a fan of or that I don't think are that great), in no particular order. Top 3 1. Serah (7-035)  I'm sure this blip sounds similar to what Kageyama-san posted a while back for the spoilers, but it seems I'm a little partial to ice cards.  I think her effect is pretty...ahem... cool , though.  :^) Her enter-the-field effect al...

Fun Deck Fridays!

How It Started During the Opus 6 season, I was desperately trying to qualify for Nationals. This led me to bounce around from virtually every meta deck: Mono Water, Earth, Earth/Wind, Scions, Turbo Discard, and Ice/Water Vikings. Sadly, I was a win away from top cuts at the LCQ, but still ended my season on a high note. I came home with a bit of apathy with the game and found it very hard to be incentivized to go to locals on Fridays. It eventually came down to only going if I knew either of my teammates would go. I would ask John every Thursday night or Friday, “You going?” We would usually give each other the same answer, “Yeah, but I don’t have a deck ready.” “Me neither.” I was pretty burnt out on playing the meta decks and I expressed that to John. He, being a good friend and sensing what I needed, proposed an idea: “How about I build you a deck and you build me one, and we’ll roll with that?” I was very intrigued by the idea. I accepted it as a deckbuilding challenge....

Champs, Updates, and More!

Hey guys, it’s been a while since I’ve updated. Opus VII has come and it’s been very exciting trying out new builds. The first big piece of news I would like to share is to officially announce the birth of our team: Team “The First Brood.” Athena, John, and I are very excited to be together through our FFTCG journey. The goal of our team isn’t necessarily to be the greatest or most competitive. Nobody will ever be kicked because of performance, and our goal will never be Nats/Worlds-or-bust or “you must win this tournament.” Our main goal is to just have fun. Our secondary goal is to be good to others in the community and work on community building. For the most part, things haven’t changed much for us. We’ll always be a group of friends who came together mostly because our personalities clicked and we love to play and hang out with each other. So why have a team? Well, mainly because it’s fun! It’s great to always have someone in your corner, someone to bounce deck ideas off of ...

Nationals Weekend

Image
So we end up deciding to go to the LCQ to try and qualify for Nationals one last time. Thursday is hectic and we arrive at our hotel around 11pm. Funny enough, the first person we are greeted by is none other than Matthew Okimoto. We exchange our greetings and meet Kyle Mcginty, another member of MetaPotion whom I really wanted to meet. After that, we meet up with our NorCal group upstairs and meet up with our old friend Thomas who previously moved away. We also met Dan Nguyen who is a really chill and fun dude to hang with. It’s great to see so many familiar faces around and some people that I recognize from the Facebook groups, but the true best thing was that the hotel lobby was taken over by FFTCG players and all the tables and chairs had people jamming games. I couldn’t resist and ended up jamming games with good friend Azul until 3am. The day of the LCQ, there was a lot of nervous energy in the air. You could tell that many people there really wanted to qualify. The big...

Seattle Crystal Cup Report and Other Recap – Athena's Version

Hi all! Some of you may know me personally, but many of you also know me as “the GF” from Peter’s previous posts.  I’m a little private when it comes to things online, so I’ll henceforth go by my FFXIV character name, Athena.  Little background on me: FFTCG is my first card game, and going to any of these competitive events as a first timer is very intimidating.  However, the exposure to the environment is great (although my nerves and anxiety still do shake me up), I still have fun playing, and meeting people who also play the game and making new friends is the best part about the game for me. Since we are just getting back from a major tournament (following a long month of back to back to back weekends of FFTCG LQs or circuit tourneys), I figured I could write a bit on my own experiences at these events as well.  Since Peter started this blog, I’ve been meaning to write something and help contribute some content.  This is going to be a long one since it ...

Peter's Top 3/Bottom 3 Cards

Image
So I’ll try to make this a semi-regular fluff piece. Top 3 could be cards that I think are the best, interesting, undervalued, or just my favorites. Bottom 3 could be underperformers, cards I hate, or just dumb cards. Top 3 1. Nidhogg It’s no secret that this is my favorite card. It has all the elements that I love: big dragon, cool art, great effect, and it’s Dark, and he costs nine. Nine happens to be my favorite number and it always feels like you sacrifice everything to play him. I am over the moon that this card is a huge player in the meta. (Bad for my collection purposes, good for playability though!) Pretty much every game where I have resolved him, I won. (So maybe I should keep playing decks with him!) I saw the box art for Opus VIII this morning and it had another cool-looking dragon so I’m super excited and hope they keep printing more dragon forwards for me to play with! 2. Celes Celes is one of my favorite characters from the Final Fantasy universe. ...

Seattle Crystal Cup Report

Hey guys, I haven’t updated in a while because this month has been super busy for me in terms of FFTCG. I basically had training/practice, locals, and then either LQs or Circuit events from Thursdays-Saturdays all month. I was going to write reports for each event, but I was dealing with a mix of mental health issues, burnout from the game, and some laziness. For those interested, I ended up Top 4 in a Circuit event with Mono Water Vikings. Then I basically ended up 9 th -ish(?) for the two LQs and the other circuit event. I went with Mono Water again for the first LQ, switched over to Turbo Discard for the next LQ, and then played Scions for the Circuit. I essentially either choked in the final rounds or got blown out by a Titan EX in the events. There were also some issues with my decks bricking. On to Seattle! The GF and I locked into Scions and practiced it for about 3 weeks. Personally, I was very happy with how the deck performs and the power level of it. We flew in on ...
